FortNine is DANGEROUSLY Wrong About This! (One Take 701 Motovlog)

In all my spills, not once have I ever thought: "Well, guess I didn't need that protection" Sure, the dude has some compelling arguments, but it all seemed to come down to "Discomfort"... To quote Dave Chapelle: "That's a brittle-spirit" - Riding isn't comfortable. We suffer, to rejoice. Cold, wind, rain - Ain't got shit on learning this skill, smelling that wild-garlic, the petrichor, dodging the traffic and being this much closer to life. His video really made me question the rest of his videos and conclude that he probably needs just a lil' more time to cook.

What he is saying, said is that putting Nerf toy foam in jackets and pants are a waste of time.. it's the current day motorcycle equivalent of 1980s fashion shoulder pads that were sewn into things for fashion..if you look at price points from @$300 bucks and cheaper.. the foam padding included is almost always useless. For people that ride in extreme weather.. better to remove foam and go to the gas station - convenience store and fill cavities w ice!! Keep you as safe and way cooler

I believe in armour. Yes, I'm sure that it could be better, but it is better than nothing. A couple of years ago I fell while riding my Himalayan. I landed on a rock on my back and even though I had armour in that spot, I broke two ribs. For two months I had to sleep in a chair. I'm 70 years old now and I realize that my skills are not what they once were, and I don't heal the way I once did. I wear the full kit, all the time. On a recent ride I did 200 km on gravel and even though it was hot and dusty, it never crossed my mind to take my jacket off.

The worst part of this discourse is, everyone, you included miss the nuance of the argument RF9 made. What he said was, the armor, at the speeds we are going in traffic will not prevent you from breaking bones. They help with slides and might stop a bruise but they aren’t as good as the should be. Buy an airbag, wear a higher rated back protector. So instead of arguing at a straw man, speak to his actual points.

Have always admired Ryan at FortNine for his creative talent. The video you refer to is the one that made me stop watching him as often. Not a hater, just decided he is more entertainer than informer. Some thoughts: the term "armor" is a misnomer since it is really just "padding". Ryan throws around statistics about impacts and the results. Sounds real scientific until you turn your brain on and realize an impact with a car, a tree, or a concrete wall is not what these lightweight inserts are designed to protect us from. It is a level of protection, not a guarantee we won't dislocate a shoulder or go splat against the side of a garbage truck. I'm an ATGATT guy that knows I'm reducing risk, not eliminating it.

The entire f9 argument is dumb. It hinges on data which suggests bone fracture at the speed of a motorcycle crash won't be prevented with armor. Even if that were true, you can get seriously hurt from impacts without breaking any bones.. I've had an injury to my knee from a highside in gravel. Still over a year later my knee is not the same. Some of that damage maybe could have been prevented had I been wearing armor, despite the fact that no bones were broken...

Dress for the slide not for the ride as they say. Helmet gloves boots elbow knee & hip pads help a lot with lower speed road crashes. Helmet & Kevlar or leather with higher speed crash/slides. Which both are far & away the majority. Nothing is going to matter much on a higher speed blunt trauma crash.

  • @atticushexcel9567

I hate wearing all my safety gear, but I feel an obligation to my family to stay as safe as possible. I ride a KTM 890 mostly off road. Currently I wear Fox MX boots, Mobius knee braces, Fox body armor, good gloves, and finally a Helite Turtle airbag. I have deployed the airbag 2 times and both times were low speed drops on big slab rocks. I am 100% positive that something would have been broken. About 2 weeks after the crash my unprotected hip hurt as if it were broken - actually did have a small piece of padding on it. I was in excruciating pain for several days. The pain traveled from my hip to my lower back then up into my opposite shoulder blade then "out" through that shoulder. It was was a line of trauma from impact across my body in the direction of the hit. I couldn't walk without crutches for 2 days and considered an x-ray. The reason I didn't get one is because the pain traveled. 100% recommend the Helite Turtle. Expensive to get into, but SUPER easy to recharge, and it has an incredibly well designed back - hence the name Turtle. It is a mechanically deployed bag with a tether and I have over 5000 miles riding with it. No issues with anything. IF you go down it will deploy. IF you don't want it to deploy you simple remove the tether. I take off the back protection of the FOX upper armor because it is not needed. The collar is like a neck brace when deployed and stabilizes your helmet-head- it is aggressive when it deploys. The coverage area of the Helite extends down onto the upper pelvis and when it deploys it deploys. You are wrapped in an indestructible airbag. It is freaking amazing. If I could promote Helite any more I would.

I commute year round in NJ. No exceptions. F9 makes a lot of errors. My R3 padding saved me from serious injury. I was rear ended by an out of control car in a blind curving on ramp while moving. I walked away without a bruise. That bike was totaled. I didn't have many options between taking the hit and kissing a semi.

I had a low speed low-sider on my 1995 BMW R100R Mystic which has a stunningly powerful front brake. So stunningly powerful that on a perfectly dry road, on a mild day, with no gravel a car ahead signalled to turn then didn’t I locked the front wheel. Most of the impact was my right hip and ribs. I was going pretty slowly but over the next few days the pain and bruising made themselves known. My point? I was checking my latest carb balancing so no proper protection. My hip would have been fine because the protector is exactly when I landed. Must haves at all times are boots and gloves which I did, but regretted my failure because it’s “just a 5 minute ride”.

Making a video about wearing gear! That’s always a hot topic. Gets the views and comment section popping. Especially when you call out another creator. Especially when you have affiliate links it does kind of seems like click bait. Just sayin. Stay original my friend. This gear debate reminds me of Revzilla and their High side Low side “pod cast” where there is a safety gear lecture on every episode. I am pretty sure their bread and butter is “Gear”. Gear is important and we all know about the gear and where to buy it. You cannot blame people for being a little skeptical of the safety briefing on gear.

I agree to a point.... but also disagree to another.... yes if you get on a bike and ride you SHOULD put on all your armor.... but some times that is just not practical ! like if I am getting ready for a long ride tomorrow and realise my gas tank is about 1/4 tank.... so getting all suited up just to go 2 miles to the gas station is not practical ! should I ? YES there is no doubt for one most accidents happen within 5 miles from home so there is one strike against your odds to start with.... If I do get hit by a car on this short trip to get gas and I don't have my riding gear on the chances are I WILL be Hurt alot more than if I had my gear on.... I KNOW that ! but the truth of the matter is I am too lazy to get all suited up for a 5 minute ride ! it's only 2 miles away and I'm a safe rider i can do it and have no problems and I know that too.....to be totally Anil about putting on all your gear makes no sense to me. yes you will bleed alot more with my frame of mind no doubt.... but when you use your motorcycle for ALL your moving from point A to Point B there comes a point to where it is too much trouble to bother with..... hop on the bike to go to the barn or to the neighbors house is a very low risk ride going to the gas station 2 miles away is a bit riskier but still low, you are contending with traffic doing that and traffic is the biggest danger to motorcyclists. even on dirt roads out in the bush ! risk evaluation and common sense needs to enter into it. some feel if you get on a motorcycle you must have all the best armor etc.etc. some only own a single out dated helmet.and only ware jeans and go bare chested ! in sandals.... these guys are slow learners but it is their choice....not someone elses ! speed has nothing to do with it for anything above running speed at 20mph you can be just as dead as 110 on the freeway. a motorcycle is Dangerous to be on and operate. if not because of you the operator but because of the world you are riding in. 45mph into a dear will ruin your day if not end your life..... you don't have to hit a car. my armor wareing is if I'm not testing the bike on my block then I have everything on including the boots. and I am no kid where I can suit up in 10 minutes ...takes me a good 15 minutes anymore just to go putt putt ! one major reason why I have not ridden any of my bikes so far this year....it's not worth the hassle of getting ready to ride.... so I don't ride ! because I will not ride for any length of time without all the armor.... because I too learned the hard way.

And you knew all of this before ever watching this gear lecture video because every creator with affiliate links does the gear lecture videos. Nothing wrong with the gear, but it’s preaching to the choir and it’s done mainly because it sells. Gear sells and fear sells. We know the story already. One more lecture is not going to get you to slip into a European track suit to get gas. Road rash or a busted skull might, but probably not and that is your choice. The typical calling out another creator (drama) is disingenuous and unnecessary. 😮 😂

You mention that even a thin motocross jersey would make a difference. I agree although wear more than that. Years ago, before my proper ring gear days, I went down on hard dirt with crushed rock on top wearing only a T-shirt on my top. Tumbled a couple times then slid to a stop. A sleeve of the T-shirt was rather shredded but my skin under that fabric was in much better shape than the skin just an inch away that had no fabric at all over it. I think it is good many/most of us are past the jeans and T-shirt days and were better gear.

After seeing what happened to moto giant recently I decided to invest in a proper pair of boots. Went with alpine star tech 7 and I really like them even though99.999% of my riding is on pavement and they're closer to an mx boot. The one issue I have is shifting in them. Its been suggested that I get an extended gear lever, but I'm thinking I can use this as an excuse to buy a dual sport.

I was literally typing this same thing when I saw your post. Same. I have a nice pair of boots, but I can't find the shift lever.

@@patring620 Have you tried raising the lever? That's all I needed when I was adjusting to the new enduro boots. I bought Tech 5s after witnessing a riding buddy nearly breaking his ankle when he dropped his T7 in a gravel parking lot on his leg. He was wearing adventure boots at the time, I was as well. I took that as a sign that I should upgrade and I'm glad I did, I feel much more secure going offroad, especially since I'm not Paul Tarres (he wears proper boots too, though)!

Absolutely a good Reason 🤣. Alternatively you can raise your shifter up a few clicks usually.

I tried raising my shifter, and then ended up putting it back. It was easier to dig around for it than to have to lift my entire foot off the peg to upshift because it was just too high, even rotating it one notch. I have since installed a revolver shifter, and that’s been better than anything else I’ve tried. It’s still not the perfect setting, but I’ve gotten use to it.

Moto Giant is an impressive man. And I think his accident has made a lot of people rethink their gear choices.

The Fortnine video was released on April Fools Day (tongue in cheek remarks). I think the point he was trying to make is that marketing sometimes exaggerates the amount of protection. Armor, at best, prevents against bruising and road rash. The new air vests are showing real promise because they spread out the impact force plus add rigidity to reduce the chance of broken bones.

      @bobkelly2447 День назад

yah but road rash is well worth the riding gear alone ! no it's not going to prevent a broken leg or broken rib but Road rash is something bad enough to want to prevent ! been there done that !

@@bobkelly2447 I don't remember where, but I watched an interview with a dude who used to help define EU certifications for motorcycle apparel. He basically explained how lately the standards for armor had been lowered slightly compared to a few years ago, on purpose, and he explained that making the armor thinner and more comfortable to wear made a huge statistical difference when looking at the rate and type of injuries for riders. The reasoning is that if you make stuff comfortable and easy to use, then people are going to wear the gear and be protected to a better degree than when they opt not to wear any gear because it's too bulky, too stiff or too hot. Sure, it won't protect you as well in a 70mph crash, but it will still offer better protection than a T-shirt, and be actually quite effective at lower speeds (in-town tends to be where more crashes happen, at intersections) - any amount of armor will also add to abrasion resistance, which makes these comfy fabric jackets and pants more effective. The same reasoning applies to making gear look cool or casual, and/or breathable when summer hits. Basically, make it the path of least resistance to wear decent but not perfect protection, and you achieve your goal of protecting more people.

Poor timing then considering the subject.. Some proper gear makes a difference,, even a little gear will make a difference.

@@ApocalypseNouille Yeah people are whiny punks that need to be wrapped in swaddling clothes their entire lives or to show off their "brotherhood". Screw that narcissistic nonsense. The last Harley wreck I saw on I-75 was a horror show. I actually saw the wreck as it happened. Of course the bad ass rider had zero gear and a stupid brain pan helmet. It was quite a show watching all his buddies slowly ride by the 100 ft. of torn off bike parts and him laying there with his pants and shirt ripped torn off as well. His body was in weird shapes because the bike rode him like a toy pony. I am pretty sure he was dead. Heard a terrible story from an EMT about a girl who fell off the back of a Harley and her breast was literally ground off down to the bone in a 35 mph slide. We live in a VERY popular area for the fat fashion boys to ride "twisties" or as we call them, curves. There is not a single one of the hundreds of Harley riders I see each year wearing protective gear other than some shitty helmet. It is like playing pro football without a helmet because you are cool. Good luck morons - only problem I have is that they sometimes don't die which increases my insurance costs.
